Call out for blood donations in Meridian

While supplies last, blood donors Thursday at Wal-Mart on Route 19 in Meridian will receive a Sept. 11 15th anniversary commemorative t-shirt.

Anticipating an increased need because of Labor Day weekend accidents and an a depleted supply because of flooding in Louisiana and South Mississippi, United Blood Services is asking donors to step up.

Blood donors Thursday, Sept. 1 at the Meridian Community Blood Drive will receive a 9/11 “Never Forget” 15th anniversary commemorative t-shirt while supplies last.

The drive is scheduled from 2-6 p.m. Thursday at Wal-Mart on Highway 19 in Meridian.

Blood donation takes about an hour from check-in to refreshments, according to a news release. Donors can save about 20 minutes at the site by completing their Fast Track Health History the day they donate at www.UnitedBloodServices.org.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 and 17 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian, according to the news release.
