Meridian Police Department Capt. John Griffith said felony warrants for aggravated battery were issued for three adults earlier this week related to the beating two months ago of a 16-year-old Meridian youth.

Warrants were issued for brothers Kyle N. Green, 34, and Cody A. Green, 25, as well as Kolbie Sheffield, 18. The men’s whereabouts are unknown. The beating reportedly took place near 47th Avenue and 11th Street, police said.

“We’ve also reached out to the FBI to look into the case as far as civil rights violations and hate crime offenses are concerned,” Griffith said. “We’re waiting on them to come look at the evidence we’ve got. They’ll get copies of videos and start their own investigation and see if it fits in the federal guidelines.”

The accused are white, the 16-year-old is black.

Griffith said the department had been waiting for the victim’s medical records to learn the extent of his injuries. Those injuries included a fractured facial bones. The medical records were received Tuesday evening.

The trio are affiliated with a loosely-tied group called the Simon City Royals, Griffith said.

“I don’t know where the name originated,” Griffith said. “We think they’re in the tri-county area, but they could be out of state. They’ve been placed on the NCIC, or National Crime Information Center database.”

According to Loretta Bennett, who’s been advocating for more public attention to the case, Walker left Meridian to go stay with his mother in Tennessee. The gang sent a threatening video to Walker’s phone last Thursday with the message that the group had unfinished business with the youngster, Bennett said.

Bennett said she posted a video regarding the beating to her Facebook account and got over one million views.

“Four Simon City Royals gang members brutally beat a 16-year-old black male,” Bennett said. “They took him from his auntie’s house on on 47th Avenue and 11th Street and put a gun to his head and forced him to walk to the back of their house.”
