Man charged in child sex case

A Lauderdale County man has been arrested and charged in connection with a sexual assault on a child, according to Lauderdale County Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun.

Calhoun said Alejandro Lopez Mendoza, 26, has been charged with two counts of lustful touching of a child and one count of sexual battery of a child. Calhoun said Mendoza was arrested Friday following allegations from family members.

“This is not a situation where this was a stranger, or someone didn’t know who he (Mendoza) was,” Calhoun said. 

The chief deputy said it it unknown if there are other victims.

Calhoun said Mendoza is being held at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility. He has a $50,000 bond for each of the three charges for a total bond of $150,000. 

Mendoza’s case will be presented to the next Lauderdale County grand jury for review Calhoun said.
