Senior Allen Bracken was the second-place winner of the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes in the overall meet, while junior Caleb Tanner and sophomore Stephen Miller both finished sixth in their respective competitions. Tanner competed in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles, while Miller threw the discus.
Calvary track coach Mike Denson said while it doesn’t look likely track will return at Calvary next year, the team couldn’t have picked a better way to go out, especially with their lack of resources with which to practice. Calvary doesn’t have a track or a long jump pit, so the athletes had to practice at Church of the Way, where the football team practices, in the field out back.
“This is the first time they’ve had anyone do as well as they did at (the overall meet),” Denson said. “I’m really proud of them. They worked really hard without any resources, and they really surpassed all of our expectations through mere perseverance.”
Calvary had to qualify at both the district and North State meets in order to make it to the overall competition.
“It wasn’t something that was just handed to them,” Denson said.
Our of 25 teams in the MAIS Class A division, Calvary finished 11th overall at the meet.
