Playoff roundups: Newton County baseball gets sweep

Newton County High School remained undefeated in postseason play Friday, besting Lawrence County High School 6-1 in the MHSAA Class 4A state quarterfinal round of the postseason.

The win gave Newton County (28-5) a sweep, advancing the Cougars to the state semifinals. The Cougars were led at the plate by John Ross Griffin, who went 2-for-3 with a double.

Eli Harrison got the win for Newton County, tossing seven innings of one-run ball while yielding just three hits and two walks and striking out one.

Cain Cleveland had a two-run single for Newton County. Jacob Edwards and Alec Ivey both finished 2-for-3, and Ivey had three RBIs.
