No warmth for ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’

“The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ is an unnecessary sequel to an unnecessary film. The original movie, “Snow White and the Huntsman,” tried to retell the Grimms’ story as a live-action epic. That didn’t work. And without a doubt, this one didn’t either.
Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” was not only a misstep in the franchise, but also a misstep in cinema in general. The movie was ridiculous, dull, and laughable. With such a stellar cast like Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, and even Liam Neeson as the Narrator, I would have expected at least a better than average film. Instead, I watched a film that made me bored almost the whole way through.
“The Huntsman: Winter’s War” follows the story of the title character (Chris Hemsworth) and his lover (Jessica Chastain) as they try to escape from the evil wrath of their queen (Emily Blunt). Evan Spiliotopolous and Craig Mazin, who both basically mailed in any semblance of coherent plot or logical dialogue, wrote the movie.
The director also forgot to, well, direct the film, with quite a bit of nonsense cinematography and terrible pacing showing this clearly. While some of the action scenes were good, and the CGI was fantastic, it was mostly all magic and mysticism without substance. It was like Michael Bay directing a “Harry Potter” film. The casting directors did a fine job of bringing such an amazing group of actors and actresses together, but the movie gave them nothing to work with. The chemistry between Jessica Chastain and Chris Hemsworth was excellent, but I would rather see them in a romantic comedy than a fantasy extravaganza. Emily Blunt’s character made little to no sense, with her transitioning from a villain to a heroine and vice versa multiple times throughout the film. It was a jumbled mess no one could understand.
All in all, “The Hunstman: Winter’s War” is a film only true fans of bland storytelling and inane character development should see. Money should not be given to this movie, and as a result, hopefully no more in the franchise will be made. 3/10.
