Organizers of the upcoming Relay For Life in Newton County are getting ready to “Paint Your World Purple” as they prepare for this year’s event.

The annual American Cancer Society fundraiser is scheduled for Friday at the Newton County Show Barn. That’s a new location for the annual event, according to entertainment chairperson Judy Linton.

“We decided to move the location from the walking track at East Central because you never know what the weather is going to do,” Linton said. “We wanted to do something different, and also get a new outlook on things.”

Organizers hope to reach their goal of $37,000 this year.

“Last year we raised $35,223, so we set the goal a little higher,” said Lisa Jay, sponsorship chairperson. “So far we have about eight teams, and it is not too late to sign up, the more we have the better. Because Relay For Life is a community event, anyone and everyone can participate.

Teams of 10 to 15 people from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools and service organizations can participate in the event, she said.

Registration begins at 6 p.m. followed by a survivors’ reception at 7 p.m. Each survivor will receive a goodie bag donated by the Decatur Women’s Progressive Club. They will also have their name entered into a drawing for a quilt, donated by Sally Green. Cake will be served after the survivors’ walk.

Jay said one of the cornerstones of the event is the luminaria ceremony, where candles will be placed inside bags in remembrance of those who have lost their battle with cancer, and to honor those who have fought or continue to fight the disease.

Events and entertainment are scheduled throughout the night, with music, games, and a variety of food that includes funnel cakes, homemade corn dogs and cheese sticks, popcorn, nachos, cotton candy, pickles, and beverages.

Community members are encouraged to attend and support the event.

“Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event, bringing communities together in hope, celebration, and memory,” said Olivia Marble, survivor chairperson. “It is a unique event that offers everyone in the community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer.
