FOREST — Southeast Lauderdale High School had already wrapped up the Region 5-3A championship, so coach Shay Cooper was hoping for something else: getting hot heading into the playoffs.

Led by two freshmen, the Tigers raced past Forest High School 14-3 in their final division game Tuesday night.

Southeast Lauderdale (12-13) will face Magee High School in the first round of the MHSAA Class 3A playoffs. Forest, which with the lost clinched the No. 4 seed, will face St. Andrew’s High School.

“We started out flat for whatever reason,” Cooper said. “But Zach Flascamp got a big hit for us, and things took off from there.”

Down 3-1 in the top of fourth inning, Flascamp, the Tigers’ freshmen shortstop, hit a three-run double to left giving Southeast Lauderdale the lead for good at 4-3.

He had two hits to help lead the Tigers.

“I’ve said this before, he’s going to be special,” Cooper said. “I’m hoping we are playing well going into the playoffs, because once you’re in, anything can happen.”

Ethan Boatner, Trevor Shirley, Dylan Shirley and Bryan Rivers all had two hits for Southeast Lauderdale.

The Tigers would score four runs in the fifth and sixth inning to break things open.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Dakota Boney tossed a complete game, scattering five hits and yielding three earned runs while walking four and striking out three.

“He was huge for us tonight,” Cooper said. “We were hoping to get two or three innings out of him, and goes out and gets a complete game for us. He’s another good one for us in the future”

Dylan Shoemaker and Taylor Carnley had two hits each to lead Forest (10-14).

“One bad inning can cost you and that’s what happened to us tonight,” Forest coach Keith Brown said.
