Meridian CC tennis men, women roll past Co-Lin

The Meridian Community College tennis squads swept past Copiah-Lincoln Community College on the road Tuesday.

The MCC men took a convincing 8-1 decision to move their record to 15-0 on the season. At the end of the men’s doubles matches, MCC carried a 2-1 lead. MCC’s No. 1 doubles team of Jason Pimenta/Breno Goncalves defeated Mateusz Kimelski/Cory Alderman 8-4.  The Eagles’ No. 2 doubles, Samuel Butler/Walt Harrington, won a tough battle against Will Pennington/Hayes Thompson 8-6.

MCC’s No. 3 doubles, Noah James/John Taylor Champion, lost to Braxton Hinton/Drake Nelson 8-3. The Eagles swept the men’s singles early with the 1, 2 and 3 flight picking up wins to seal the team win. Their wins made it 5-1.

Pimenta won in straight sets over Kimelski 1,1. Noah James picked up the win at No. 3 singles against Hinton 0,4.  Breno Goncalves was off the court quickly at two singles with a 0,0 win against Skylar Moody. MCC’s No. 4 Samuel Butler added another win by defeating Hayes Thompson 6-3, 6-3.

Will Irvin, who has one loss this season at No. 5 singles, picked up the win against Drake Nelson 7-5, 7-6 (4). Walt Harrington finished out the day with a 4,4 win over Cory Alderman. The MCC men are currently in Oklahoma City, Okla., through April 3 competing in an eight-team tournament against some of the best teams in the nation.  MCC will return home again on April 7 for a match with Marion Military Institute at Northeast Park.

The MCC women picked up another win over the Co-Lin 9-0. The women are now 14-2 on the season and 10-1 in MACJC conference play.

The Lady Eagles swept the doubles. Paige Gibson/Shelby Zachry defeated Brandi Warren/Brandi McInnis 8-3. At No. 2 doubles, Jordyn Hull/Alden Hartley defeated Susanna Ratcliff/Chantel Quarles 8-1; Jami Daugherty/Taylor Miller picked up the win at No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 score over Bayli Battle/Julie Kramer. At No. 1 singles, Gibson won 2,4 against Madison Warren; Zachry took No. 2 singles with a 1,0 score over Brandi McInnis.

MCC’s Jami Daugherty, subbing in for injured Kyra Holway, defeated Chantel Quarles 2,3. Hayden Hill defeated Susanna Ratcliff 0,0 at No. 4 singles. MCC’s Jordyn Hull picked up the win over Bayli Battle 1,1. Taylor Miller finished out the day with a 0,0 win over Julie Kramer.

MCC’s women will return to action April 5 with a road trip to play Faulkner State. The Lad Eagles return home April 7 to play Marion Military at Northeast Park.
