Grayson Rose’s Chicken Little turkey call

- Grayson Rose displays his Chicken Little turkey call that he designed and made with his dad Joey and named himself.
Five-year-old Grayson Rose has been an avid hunter since he could walk and he’s been following in his dad’s footsteps ever since. In fact, he recently came up with the idea of making a call of his very own, one that would fit his hand instead of an oversized adult call. Joey Rose had an idea in mind also and the two started tinkering with some cedar and after quite a bit of design and study they started working on a kid sized call that would call turkeys.
“Grayson came up with the name for the call, ‘Chicken Little’,” said Rose. “We wanted something small enough for a youngster but good enough to call in a big gobbler.”

And that’s just what they came up with, a Chicken Little call that is little in name only because it’s very easy to handle and play, with little to no training required. If you can stroke a box call you can play this one with ease.
“I got back from the NWTF National Convention and wanted to make a call for my son to hold and use, and Grayson gave me the idea and we started on it,” Rose said. “We decided to make a small box to fit his hand.”
“I told him lets go to the shed and make one for you,” said Rose. “He was pumped up and ready to get started so we picked out some cedar for the first one.” The first box was made out of cedar and played a mean yelp.
“We made a cedar box and it really sounded good so I knew we were onto something,” Rose said. “It didn’t take much tuning either and Grayson can really play the fire out of it and he’s really good for a five-year-old.”
Young Grayson can yelp, cut and call. He puts his thumb on the paddle and cuts like a pro.
“When you get a call to fit you then you can do it a lot better, whether you’re an adult or kid,” he said. “And when you’re really little you can’t find too many calls that will fit your hand.”

Young Grayson helped his dad size the call properly through testing and they were set.
“He came up with the name Chicken Little on his own, and I cut it out and he helped me put it together and glue it up and he stayed right with me until we had our prototype,” said Rose. “He’s been watching me design and build calls for quite some time and now he’s helping me build his very own kid size turkey call.”
While the talented father and son duo just wanted to make a call for Grayson to practice and call with, the Chicken Little call has really stirred up some interest among fellow turkey hunters and they are snapping them up for their own kids about as fast as Joey and Grayson can make them. They sound good, are easy to use and should be death on gobblers. Enough said!
“We didn’t come up with the idea to sell a bunch of calls, but people have really been asking for them,” Rose said. “And we’re going to keep on making them right up until turkey season and then we’re going turkey hunting.”
