COLLINSVILLE — The Collinsville tornado in early February caused damage to West Lauderdale High School’s baseball field, but the only way you could tell Friday night was the lack of a scoreboard behind the outfield wall.

A temporary scoreboard was posted near the first-base dugout, and fans otherwise had a normal experience at the Lauderdale County Tournament, taking in a 2-0 Northeast Lauderdale High School win over Clarkdale High School to open the night.

The Trojans’ two first-inning runs in the first inning proved the difference, and an efficient Devin Sisson was the winner for Northeast Lauderdale on the mound, as the Northeast Lauderdale starter worked six strong frames, yielding just two hits, two walks and two hit by pitches while striking out five. It was both teams’ season-opener, and each team saw some positives on the mound Friday night.

“A win is a win,” Trojans head coach Josh Snider said. “Hats off to (Clarkdale starting pitcher Kellen) Spann. He kept us off balance all night. The kid has a good future and threw an excellent game. We had a decent first inning, but after that, we could not get comfortable at the plate all night.

“(Sisson) was throwing good strikes. His offspeed was there when we needed it. We didn’t want to use it too much, but when we had to rely on it (we did). Devin is a competitor. He got into a couple of jams, but he didn’t give up, and that’s the thing we preach is not giving up and giving in.”

Clarkdale head coach Scott Gibson said he was glad to have the season get underway but said the offense would have to get better going forward.

“We pitched it well enough,” Gibson said. “Kellen kept us in the game, and with the exception of one inning, he controlled the whole game. We left nine to 10 guys on base and took a lot of fastballs for strikes. Very poorly-coached offensive team is what it boils down to, we just have to come back. It’s game one; we’ll be OK.”

Duncan Ziller, who ran for Luke Harper, and A.J. Thomas, who ran for Sisson, both scored on RBIs by Landon Keller and Daniel Richards for Northeast Lauderdale in the first inning. After that, Spann cruised for four more innings, finishing with three hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts. Dawson Ivey threw one inning for Clarkdale, striking out two.

“They were just throwing strikes and keeping the fastball down in the zone after the first inning,” Gibson said.

Daniel Richards threw the seventh inning for Northeast Lauderdale and was able to work around Chase Stephens and Dylan Reeves reaching base on bloop singles to left field to get the save for the Trojans. He struck out one and walked one.

No player from either team had more than one hit.

Northeast Lauderdale (1-0) will take on Southeast Lauderdale High School at 1 p.m. today, while Clarkdale will face West Lauderdale at 3:30 p.m.

SOUTHEAST 7, WLHS 3

Zack Flaskamp had three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of work as Southeast Lauderdale rolled past West Lauderdale in both teams’ season opener.

Alec Marlow started for the Tigers, surrendering three runs on one hit in 2 2/3 innings pitched. He also struck out three.

Luke Miller took the loss for West.

Trevor Shirley had a two-run home run for Southeast Lauderdale, and Marlow finished with two hits and an RBI. Ethan Boatner tallied three hits, Bryce Wilson hit a double and Lane Taylor had an RBI single.
