Seeing the ball drop in the middle of Times Square in New York City has always been the standard for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Almost any movie ever made about what takes place on NYE has involved getting to New York.
While that is still fun for some, in this new era of extreme sports and YOLO (You Only Live Once) tattoos, the ball drop has kind of played itself out. If crowds, extremely high prices for everything and standing in place for hours aren’t your thing, below are a few unique celebration options — both luxury and affordable — that are a little off the beaten path.
1. Midnight skydiving is growing in popularity. Doing it on New Year’s Eve makes it even more spectacular.
Hurling yourself out of a plane at the stroke of midnight and watching the ground speeding toward you before pulling your rip cord is an invigorating way to ring in the new year.
2. Get dressed up in your best disco shorts, tank tops and cover yourself with glitter because you are going to the 3rd Annual Totally Awesome 80’s New Years Even Bash which is being held at the Austin Roller Rink. The night includes a balloon Drop and champagne toast at midnight, 80s theme costume contest, karaoke, food.
3. For those who love ringing in the New Year more than once, services like Private Fly can make that happen.
Passengers will start in Sydney, Australia, where they’ll party from 8 p.m. on December 31 until just after 1 a.m. on January 1. Then, they’ll board a Gulfstream jet for the approximately 11-hour flight to Los Angeles, where they’ll touch down at just past 8 p.m. on December 31, to do it all again. All of that for only $14,000.
“This is the ultimate in luxury ways to see in 2015, in two of the world’s most exciting party cities,” said Carol Cork, marketing director of PrivateFly. “The flight time from Sydney to LA in a Gulfstream G650 is now just under 11 hours, so with the 19-hour time difference, you can gain eight hours of party time by flying eastwards. This unique flight experience is only possible by private jet, as the timings are so tight – and there are no airline schedules to fit the itinerary.”
4. Golf is such a passion for many people around the world that they would rather have a driver in their hands than a champagne bottle as 2016 is rung in. But at TopGolf, you can do both. From 9 pm to 2 AM, revelers can go to the popular entertainment complex with locations in 14 states, where there will be a live DJ spinning tracks as you work on your golf game and drink cocktails to celebrate the New Year.
At TopGolf, customers use real clubs to hit regular golf balls onto a state-of-the-art outfield. The rest of the building is decked out in a club and party atmosphere.
5. If you feel a true need to watch a countdown and ball drop, skip New York City. Instead, head down to Jackson Square in New Orleans.
The French Quarter will be packed with festive partygoers and live music to count down the time until the New Year arrives. And instead of the typical New Year’s Ball drop, New Orleans will have its giant fleur de lis drop from a 25-foot pole from its perch on the top of Jax Brewery. It will be followed by a fireworks show over the Mississippi River.
After the show, you can follow the crowds to Bourbon Street and party until the early morning. That’s New Year’s Eve, Southern style.
