HATTIESBURG (AP) — A.J. Brown and DeKaylin Metcalf each caught two touchdown passes as Mississippi beat Alabama 28-21 on Saturday in the 29th annual Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Football Classic.

The game was the first in the series to be played in Mississippi and the state’s first win since 2007, snapping a seven-game Alabama winning streak.

Brown, who played at Starkville High School, had nine catches for 137 yards, including touchdowns of 35 and 17 yards. Metcalf, who has verbally committed to play at Ole Miss after finishing his prep career at Oxford, finished with five catches for 151 yards, with touchdowns of 69 and 32 yards.

The two shared Most Valuable Player honors for Mississippi.

Alabama’s defense kept it close by grabbing three interceptions, including a pair by Hoover’s Patrick Hall and another that Gordo linebacker Benjamin Davis returned 76 yards for a touchdown.

Meridian High School standouts Zaire Jones and Quincy Lenton, both defensive backs, and Raekwon Davis, a defensive lineman, all saw playing time in Mississippi’s win.

“It was very, very competitive,” Davis said. “I was happy to be in the game.”

Jones had three tackles and an interception returned for 17 yards, while Lenton tallied three tackles and Davis had 4.5 tackles, two of which were for loss.

“It was great to play with a lot of players with the same talent level as you,” Jones said. “It really tests your skill level playing with high-caliber athletes.”

Said Lenton, “First of all, I think it’s a privilege to be on the field with so many athletes at one time. It’s an honor to play with and against them. It shows you where you’re at and what you need to improve on.”

On the interception, which came in the third quarter, Jones said he was proud to have helped stall Alabama’s momentum, as the catch came on the Mississippi 22 and staved off a potential scoring drive.

“I played it just like I thought it would be,” Jones said. “It was right in my hands. It felt good — anything to help Mississippi get a win. I was just trying to put myself in the right position to do something.”

And snapping Alabama’s seven-game winning streak made the experience all the more sweeter, Lenton said.

“I’m glad it was us,” Lenton said. “The Class of 2016 has a lot of athletes, so I’m glad we got to show it today.”

Union High School head coach Brad Breland and Quitman High School head coach Steve Bynum also coached in the game. Getting to coach so many high-caliber athletes was a dream come true, Bynum said.

“It was fantastic,” Bynum said. “Everything was great. They’re really great athletes and just great kids in general, character-wise. It was just a blessing, a lot of fun.”

Breland said there were several things about the game that made it a worthwhile experience.

“We had a blast the whole week,” Breland said. “I couldn’t have asked for things to have gone any better. It was special in a lot of ways: It was the first time we hosted the game here in Mississippi, and it was the first time we won in seven or eight years, so both of those things combined made it a good day for the State of Mississippi.”
