Nearly a month ago on Nov. 12, Matthew Riggins evaded members of the Brevard County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) who were chasing him on suspicion of committing burglaries. On Nov. 23, the remains of his body were found in an area lake torn into pieces.
The BCSO confirmed Monday that Riggins had been eaten by an alligator as he attempted to elude authorities.
According to WFTV, Riggins and an alleged accomplice ran from deputies into a wooded area and were never found. Deputies later learned Riggins had called his girlfriend while he was being chased and told her the police were after him.
Riggins, 22, was reported missing to the Palm Bay Police Department the next day, Nov. 13, when he didn’t return home.
While searching for Riggins, a dive team found his remains. They also encountered an 11-foot alligator near his body, which was missing its lower extremities and part of an arm, according to deputies.
According to WFTV, a forensic examination of the alligator located remains consistent with the injuries to Riggins inside the alligator’s stomach.
“So at that point, we had a belief that he was probably attacked by the alligator when he was trying to get away from police,” said Maj. Tod Goodyear of the BCSO.
Florida Fish and Wildlife officials caught the animal and had it euthanized.
Deputies located Riggins’ alleged accomplice, who is refusing to cooperate with the investigation.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, this is the second death caused by an alligator this year. James Okkerse, 61, was killed in October after he was attacked by a 12-foot gator while swimming.
