“It was just a well-played game,” Lady Knights head coach Matt Lum said. “The game went back and forth the whole time, and neither team could really build a big lead. In overtime, we made a few key plays early on to set the tone for the rest of the (overtime period).”

Mallory Thompson led West in scoring with 16 points, while Heather Tolon chipped in with 11 points.

“Heather made some really big shots for us,” Lum said. “She was under control and took really good shots, and Mallory Thompson kind of did a little bit of everything and dominated the boards and scored a couple of key baskets there, especially in overtime.”

Lum said he was glad to get the game in, considering his squad has a week-long break before its next game.

“It’s just a good time to let you recuperate and re-think and go back and look at these past six games and build on what we didn’t do well and turn those weaknesses exposed into strengths,” Lum said.

In the boys’ game, West’s Stone Fielder scored 15 points, while Michael Washington tallied 13 points.

“They were smaller (than Germantown’s players) and were able to get around their bigger guys and finish at the basket by using their quickness,” West boys coach Duran Clark said of his two leading scorers.

Clark also said he was pleased with his team’s ability to do well against an opponent from a higher classification.

“I thought we played a pretty good game,” Clark said. “They’re a bigger 5A school, and we played pretty good defense and executed our offense.”

Going into the Thanksgiving break, Clark said getting the win was good for his team’s momentum.

“Last year, they beat us here,” Clark said. “We talked about that. We didn’t want to go into Thanksgiving (with a loss), so it was good to get a win going into the break.”

West Lauderdale resumes play next Tuesday, Dec. 1, at South Jones High School. The girls (4-2) will tip off at 6 p.m., followed immediately by the boys (3-3).
