Prep football playoffs: Kemper Academy falls in semis, Union loses

In Gulfport, a 25-yard passing play and an extra-point kick gave Christian Collegiate Academy the point it needed to edge Kemper Academy 43-42 Friday night in the state semifinal round of the MAIS 8-man football playoffs.

With 2:47 to go and Kemper Academy leading 42-36, Christian Collegiate hit a 25-yard passing touchdown and decided to line up for the extra point. Up until that last touchdown, Christian Collegiate had been going for two points the entire game, but it was able to punch in the PAT to get the win.

In the first quarter, KA’s Dalton Sanderford had his first touchdown of the night at the 6:23 mark when he hit Michael Hull from 65 yards out. Sanderford also had a 13-yard touchdown run in the first quarter

Sanderford added another touchdown run in the second quarter, this time for 24 yards, and the score was tied 22-22 at the break.

In the third quarter, Sanderford connected with Hull again for a 22-yard scoring pass, and Jacquez Cole added a 40-yard punt return for the Rams.

KA’s final touchdown came on a 1-yard carry by Trent Lightner with 4:26 left in the game. The Rams got the ball back after Christian Collegiate went ahead 43-42, but an interception at the 1:16 mark sealed the win for the Bulldogs.

Sanderford finished 12 of 17 for 203 yards. KA ended its season with an 11-1 record.

BASSFIELD 54, UNION 8

In Bassfield, Union High School ran into a buzzsaw in Bassfield High School as the home Yellowjackets eliminated Union in the second round of the MHSAA Class 2A playoffs.

Union scored its one touchdown in the second quarter when Tradarius Harris got in on a 1-yard carry.

Union finished its season with an 8-5 record.
