Mary Swindell, assistant director of Ross Collins Career and Technical Center and Science Instructional Specialist for the Meridian Public School District, has been named the 2015 Outstanding Informal Science Teacher by the Mississippi Science Teacher’s Association.
Swindell was presented the award and an engraved plaque during the Annual Convention of the Mississippi Science Teacher’s Association, held recently at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson.
“The Meridian Public School District is extremely proud that Mrs. Swindell is being recognized on the State level for her outstanding work in the area of science,” MSD Superintendent Dr. Alvin Taylor said. “She is very deserving of this honor.”
The Outstanding Informal Science Teacher award is one of seven awards presented annually by the Mississippi Science Teacher’s Association, and it is presented to a person not employed as a science teacher but who has contributed to science education in some manner. Educators are nominated for the awards by their peers, students, parents, etc, and their applications are reviewed by a panel of judges who make the selection for MSTA.
Swindell serves as a Science Instructional Specialist for the Meridian Public School District and works with the district’s elementary and secondary science teachers.
Founded in 1971, the Mississippi Science Teacher’s Association is designed to assist science teachers as they strive to offer students the best opportunities available. The organization uses its annual convention to allow teachers to present ideas to fellow teachers and to glean information and ideas from each other to better equip themselves for their classroom.
