JACKSON – Mississippi Museum of Art’s November slate of Third Thursday programming will include a pop up exhibit “Folk Art: Master and Apprentice,” highlighting four pairs of contemporary makers who are recipients of Mississippi Arts Commission’s Folk Arts Apprenticeship grants.

Every third Thursday, the museum presents Museum After Hours, opening the doors after hours to partner with and embrace Mississippi’s creative community. These collaborations feature one-night pop up exhibitions and dining experiences, live music, outdoor movies and more. Each month has a new theme and a new story.

The pop up exhibit “Folk Art: Master and Apprentice,” which will be presented Nov. 19, will feature quilters Rhonda Blasingame (master) and Angelean Jones (apprentice) from Jackson; two pairs of Djembe drummers, Jerry Jenkins (master) and Raha Maxwell (apprentice) from Jackson and Ridgeland, and Newman “Baba Asante” Nalls (master) and Lisa Dunn (apprentice) from Jackson; and potters Brian Nettles (master) and Joe Geil (apprentice) from Pass Christian. This exhibition is presented in partnership with the Mississippi Arts Commission.

“The Mississippi Arts Commission is thrilled to partner with the Mississippi Museum of Art in showcasing the inspiring work of our recent group of Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant recipients,” said Jennifer Joy Jameson, Folk and Traditional Arts Director at the Mississippi Arts Commission.

“Museum After Hours is an innovative and accessible way to engage local people in the arts, and to cultivate ownership of the arts in everyday life. These are shared values at the MAC, and for that we are pleased to exhibit the works, stories, and songs of Mississippi’s extraordinary traditional artists at the museum!” Jameson said.

At 6 p.m., the featured musicians and makers take center stage in Trustmark Grand Hall, performing a selection of traditional music followed by a panel discussion between artists and representatives from the Mississippi Arts Commission.

“Each month, our Third Thursday events allow us to showcase some of the incredible work being done by contemporary artists and creators,” said Betsy Bradley, director of the museum. “Our November program spotlights yet another layer of the state’s compelling artistic story.”

In addition to the Museum After Hours pop up exhibition anchoring the evening, Third Thursday components also include a pop up restaurant by Executive Chef and Culinary Curator Nick Wallace, part of his monthly ‘sipp Sourced pop up dining experiences, which source ingredients and inspiration from local purveyors.

This month’s ephemeral culinary pop up is themed Master vs. Apprentice, playfully pitting Chef Wallace against Chef Enreka Williams, who once trained under Wallace’s tutelage. Diners are invited to vote with their palates. A running tally of votes, cast in the form of placed orders, will determine a champion, who will be awarded the “Grease Trap” trophy, an amalgamated sculpture made of discarded kitchen equipment. ‘sipp Sourced is available for lunch Nov. 19-21, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and at Museum After Hours, from 5:30 p.m.-’til. ‘sipp Sourced is sponsored by Capital City Beverages.

Outdoors, a High Note Jam concert in The Art Garden hosted by the Greater Jackson Arts Council featuring the Paperclip Scientists leads into a Screen on the Green showing of “Back to the Future II” in partnership with Crossroads Film Society.

Additionally, the Mississippi School of the Arts (MSA) will host a “Connect Event,” with information for potential students and parents, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Yates Community Room.

MAC Folk Arts Apprenticeships

The Folk Art Apprenticeship program helps to assure the sustainability, development, and continued evolution of community-based traditional art forms found throughout Mississippi. The program allows master traditional artists to pass along their unique skills to promising novice artists that work in their art form. The master artist works with the apprentice on a one-on-one basis over an agreed upon period of time to teach specific aspects of the tradition. Many types of traditional artists can benefit from this program. Some examples of artists who have received Apprenticeship grants in the past include boat builders, quilters, old-time fiddlers, traditional potters, basketmakers, foodways practitioners, and blues guitarists. The program is focused on supporting forms of creative expression that have been an important part of community life for many years and that are passed on informally rather than being taught through formal instruction.

Master and Apprentice pairs can apply for a MAC Folk Arts Apprenticeship for grant up to $2,000 by submitting the application on www.arts.ms.gov by March 1, 2016.
