Those who have not made it to Lazy Acres Pumpkin Patch in Chunky this month have one more weekend to see what kettle corn, pig races, and a giant corn maze all have in common.
Founded in 1980, Lazy Acres Plantation prides itself on helping guests make memories, owner Michael May said.
“Our goal, as a family and as a farm, is to provide good clean entertainment for families,” May said. “While at the Pumpkin Patch, guests can take a hayride across the property to a large field where they can hand pick their perfect fall pumpkin.”
May said planning stages for the pumpkin patch often take place early each year, when major work must be mapped out to bring new offerings to the farm.
“This year, Lazy Acres has mixed it up be redesigning the farm layout, incorporating social media and adding new attractions for guests,” he said. “By relocating our playground and pig race track, we have expanded guest areas to offer easier access and additional seating options.”
Animal Acres – one of the Pumpkin Patch’s oldest attractions and a life-sized, fully-themed farm town – has also been expanded to include new photo spots and animal interaction opportunities, including a live calf feeding.
“Also new this year in Animal Acres is an interactive rabbit enclosure and Boss Hogg’s sheriff’s office,” May said. “Guests can tunnel through Rabbits in Wonderland and pose behind bars as a pumpkin thief, which adds to the ways in which families can do things together.”
“Face painting, sand art, animal feed, and create-a-critter stations are located within Animal Acres, while homemade lemonade, kettle corn, and other concessions can be found at both the Kettle Corn Shack, and inside Plantation Hall,” he said.
A major addition to the Pumpkin Patch this year is the newly-installed 100 ft. long slide, nestled into the grassy hill overlooking the pumpkin patch wagon route.
“Slide Mountain has been a guest favorite this year, and it’s been so much fun to hear kids and adults scream with excitement as they come down,” May said. “The slide offers side-by-side, or co-riding options, allowing for younger children to ride with a parent or guardian, while giving older children a chance to race to the bottom.”
May said guests who enter the corn maze this year are in for a social experience as they navigate the winding paths of curves and turns, which collectively form various social media icons to make up the maze.
“This year’s theme challenges guests to document their maze experience live using props, backdrops and more,” May said. “Local media outlets are represented in the maze, encouraging guests to broadcast a weather report, share a section of their favorite song or hop into the front page of their local newspaper, all while posting the experience to their social media.”
On Halloween, children 12 and under can wear their costumes to the Pumpkin Patch for trick-or-treating on the farm, and on Sunday there will be a special Pumpkin Smash Day.
