USM home to archival collection of WWII infantry division

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of documents, photographs, letters, maps and books from a decorated World War II infantry unit have been donated to the University of Southern Mississippi.
WDAM-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1RwFCQC ) the archival collection of the 103rd Infantry Division Association has been given to the University Libraries’ Special Collections.

The unit fought in late 1944 and 1945 in Europe and also participated in the liberation of Kaufering Concentration Camp near Landsberg, Germany.
About a dozen of the unit’s veterans and their families toured USM on Thursday as part of an annual reunion. Many veterans were also interviewed for Southern Miss’ oral history research.
The 103rd was activated in November 1942 and trained at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana and Camp Howse, Texas. The unit was deactivated in September 1945.
