PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) — A woman has been sentenced to three years’ probation and ordered to pay more than $14,000 in restitution for filing false claims to obtain thousands of dollars in state and federal funding she was not entitled to.

The Sun Herald of Biloxi reports (http://bit.ly/1WMe2Sa) that 34-year-old Crystal Owens was recently sentenced in Jackson County court for food stamp fraud.

Owens has admitted to filing the fraudulent claims with the State Department of Human Services to obtain $14,511 she was not entitled to between March 2012 and Sept. 2013.

The indictment says Owens filed paperwork claiming to have five minor children as dependents when she did not.

In her plea, Owens admitted trying to receive the benefits even though she didn’t have custody of her children.
