LATIMER, Miss. (AP) — A grand jury will determine whether there was any wrongdoing by a Mississippi sheriff’s deputy who shot and wounded a 51-year-old man who refused to drop a gun.

Multiple media outlets report Jackson County deputy Jacob Chavis returned to work Aug. 24 — six days after the shooting, when Chavis was put on administrative leave.

The grand jury will hear the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation’s findings about the incident. Grand jury proceedings are secret under state law, and officials won’t release the date of the next meeting.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says his office received a call Aug. 18 from an irate man who identified himself as Robert Baker. Ezell says deputies encountered Baker inside his home, and he pointed a pistol at officers.

Baker underwent surgery.
