- Mississippi Power’s Travis Ross slides in safe at third as Fox 30’s Lathan Carpenter leaps for the throw Tuesday at Phil Hardin Park.
Jacob Hostetler smacked a base hit into the right-center field gap, driving in teammates Travis Ross and Mason Grogan to complete a game-winning rally as Mississippi Power beat Fox 30, winning 7-6 in four innings in Phil Hardin kids pitch action Tuesday.
“I was just able to hit a line drive and drive in two of my friends,” said Hostetler, who finished the game with three RBIs. “It’s really exciting because that’s the second time I’ve gotten the winning hit. I actually thought we were going to lose early on, but we just came back and got them.”
Hostetler and Mississippi Power (5-4) entered the final frame trailing 6-4, but Grogan kept hope alive with an RBI double before Hostetler came up with his clutch hit.
“The team’s been becoming together; that’s our fourth win in a row,” Mississippi Power coach Jason Wiggins said. “We’ve just been teaching them the fundamentals — running through first base, tag up and take advantage of mistakes on the base paths.
“This is a lot of fun for me to see the kids excited.”
Tuesday’s loss marked the second-consecutive game Fox 30 (3-6) lost on a walk-off hit.
Fox 30 trailed 4-1 after the first inning but battled back to take a 6-4 lead in its next time up to bat. The five-run rally was highlighted by two-RBI singles from Kalifa Brookshire and Jimmie Smith III.
“We’re a very young team; we have five 8-year-olds on the team,” Fox 30 coach Benji Carpenter said. “We’re out here to have fun and learn the game. They battle every game. They don’t ever quit.”
Smith III also tallied a base hit in the first inning and tossed a scoreless third inning.
“We played hard, we just weren’t able to win,” Smith III said. “We put a lot of hard work in practice, and then we play hard in the games just trying to get better.”
Mississippi Power’s Maddox Vaughn allowed two-inherited runners to score in the second but would shut down Fox 30 from that point forward, allowing for his squad to rally for the win.
Luke Williams had an RBI and Ethan Carney laced a double for Fox 30.
Meanwhile, Christian Chambers roped a run-scoring double for Mississippi Power.
