- Josi Johnson and her mom, Lisa, stopped by the Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library Tuesday, and discovered the box for back-to-school donations.
Meridian/Lauderdale County Public Library is hosting a back-to-school party, and the library’s staff is requesting donations of school supplies for party favors.
A box has been set up in the front entrance of the downtown Meridian library, and according to Children Services Clerk Sarah Salem, supplies can be for any grade – kindergarten through high school.
“That could include notebooks, crayons, markers, pencils or any of the supplies the schools have on their supply list,” Salem said. “We will distribute them among the ones who are in attendance after the program.”
And while the supplies will help families in need, Salem said she hopes the “party” will attract more children to the library.
“We wanted to do our part by having this back-to-school party event, but we also want children to read more,” she said. “By having this party, hopefully children will see the library is a fun place to be, and they will want to come more often.”
Refreshments will be served and special entertainment will be provided by Inky the Clown.
Inky has performed at The Dixie National Rodeo, Mississippi State Fair, Jubilee Jam and other events, according to the Inky the Clown website. Inky has also volunteered at the Jerry Lewis Marathon, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Christmas Party, hospital visitations and birthday celebrations.
