ASHTABULA, Ohio — A municipal judge this week sentenced two convicted drunk drivers to some embarrassment.

The drunk drivers, Jeffrey Yenyo, 48, and Marcus J. Perry, 54, have seven and two prior operating a vehicle while intoxicated charges, respectively, according to county and city court records.

Judge Laura DiGiacomo sentenced the men to stand at the corner of Bridge Street and Lake Avenue this weekend and hold signs about drinking and driving.

The repeat offenders were ordered to stand on the corner from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, or they will get considerable prison time, DiGiacomo said.

“It’s a little bit of creative sentencing,” she said. “It’s Fourth of July weekend and there are several bars in that part of town. … I wanted to send a message.”

DiGiacomo said she’s a fan of Painesville Municipal Judge Michael Cicconetti, who is known for his unorthodox sentences, which include spending the night in the woods for dumping cats and walking 30 miles for refusing to pay a cab fare from Cleveland to Painesville.

“I like what he’s done,” she said.

The city’s chief probation officer, Marie Ranier, said she believes this unique brand of justice is an excellent idea.

“Put them out there and make the public aware,” she said. “Let them know we take drunk driving seriously.”

In addition to his drunk driving convictions, Yenyo has a long criminal record. Throughout the past 10 years, he has been found guilty of driving while under suspension, domestic violence and disorderly conduct, according court records.

Perry has two prior disorderly conduct convictions and, recently, pleaded guilty to violating a temporary restraining order, according to Municipal Court records.
