Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said that a Meridian man died after being shot by a homeowner during an apparent home invasion Sunday night.
Cobler said Anthony Dewayne Ruff, 45, of 2515 20th Ave., died at 11:45 p.m. at Anderson Regional Medical Center from a gunshot wound to the chest.
“Mr Ruff had gained entry into a home on Ninth Street and 26th Avenue that was occupied,” Cobler said. “The renter aimed for the middle and hit him right in the middle with one gunshot.”
Meridian Police Department detective Dareall Thompson confirmed that during the course of a home invasion, the person breaking into the home was shot by the homeowner.
“We received a 911 call that a male subject was trying to break into a residence,” Thompson said. “We then got another dispatch saying the subject had gotten into the home. When officers arrived at the scene, at the 900 block of Ninth Street and 26th Avenue, the homeowner said he had shot the intruder. The subject was taken by ambulance to Anderson Regional Medical Center where he later died.”
Thompson said that no charges were filed in the incident, but did say the case will be presented to the next session of the Lauderdale County Grand Jury.
