JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Democratic state Rep. Jim Evans of Jackson says he won’t seek a seventh term in the Mississippi House.
Evans announced Thursday he’s withdrawing as a candidate for the District 70 seat he has held since 1991. The district is in part of Hinds County.
Evans’ decision leaves three candidates competing in the Aug. 4 Democratic primary: Sam Begley, Tammy Cotton and Kathy Sykes.
The Democratic nominee will face Republican Pete Perry in the Nov. 3 general election.
Evans’ current four-year term ends in January. He says he will continue to push for workers’ rights as a senior organizer with the national AFL-CIO.
