The driver of a FedEx truck died in an early Saturday morning wreck on Interstate 20 when the truck he was driving went over a railroad bridge after striking a disabled car.
According to Mississippi Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy West, a Toyota car traveling west on I-20 through the community of Toomsuba at about 4:30 a.m. struck the back of an 18-wheeler near the 169 exit.
The passenger car was disabled from the impact and stalled in the right lane of I-20. The FedEx truck struck the stalled Toyota and went through the railing of a bridge that crossed a railroad track. The truck fell between 30 to 40 feet before landing upside down near the railroad track, West said.
The driver of the car was sent to a Meridian hospital for treatment. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
West said the FedEx truck was carrying 55 gallon drums of paint, with an estimated 8,900 pounds of paint on board. Paint and debris from the wreck were scattered along the interstate and adjacent to the railroad tracks.
Members of the MHP, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency, Mississippi Department of Transportation and the Toomsuba Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the accident, as did crews from Metro Ambulance.
The westbound, right lane of I-20 at the bridge where the accident occurred could be closed for days, if not weeks, until MDOT completes bridge repairs, officials said.
