Prep roundups: NCA boys advance to South Central title

LEARNED — Newton County Academy connected on 11 out of its 13 free throw attempts in the final moments to help preserve a 54-44 win over Heidelberg Academy.

Braden Smith poured in eight of his 12 points at the line in the final period.

NCA (19-4) was led by Chance Collins who scored 19 points — 16 in the first half. Seth McCormick scored 12 points and 14 pulled down 14 rebounds, while Ethan Parker had six points and 10 boards, and Brandon Harrison chipped in with 10 rebounds.

The Generals led at the the half 25-22.

With the win, Newton County Academy advances to the South Central Regional Tournament Championship against Lamar Christian at 6:30 p.m. today at Rebul Academy.

SCOTT CENTRAL 56,

CLARKDALE GIRLS 45

Alexxis Dearing scored 14 and grabbed 18 rebounds but it was not enough as Clarkdale High School fell to Scott Central 56-45 in girls action Friday night.

LaTonya Adams recorded 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs (3-19).

Clarkdale will be back in action next week in the district tournament.

SCOTT CENTRAL 57,

CLARKDALE BOYS 41

Scott Central High School led at the half 25-20 and went on to beat Clarkdale High School 57-41 in boys action Friday night.

For the Bulldogs (13-9, 5-5), Jerome Adkins scored a team-high 14 points, while Garrett Gibson recorded 11 points. Meanwhile, Clay Boman tallied 11 rebounds and scored seven points.

Clarkdale will be back in action Monday at the district tournament held at Newton High School.

LAMAR HONORS SENIORS

Despite a 19 point effort from senior Lance Strickland, Lamar School fell to East Rankin High School on senior night 63-43.

Richard Covingtn chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds, while Brett Shaffer pulled down five rebounds in the loss.

The Raiders finished the regular-season with a 11-19 overall record.

RAIDERS RECORD ROAD WIN

Lamar notched a first round District 2-3A 54-51 overtime win over Heritage Academy at Hillcrest Christian School.

Richard Covington led the Raiders with 17 ponts and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Meanwhle, Brett Shaffer recorded 16 points and Lance Strickland tallied 15 points. Luke Harrison chipped in with six rebounds.
