Fantasy outlook for NFL playoff games
Published 5:00 am Tuesday, December 30, 2014
Finally, the playoffs are here. (Not the fantasy playoffs, the real playoffs.) Now that ALL of the championship trophies have been handed out and several coaches have been fired, it is time to get down to serious football. Week 1 of the playoffs is such a relief compared to Week 17 of the regular season, no tanking, no resting starters, nope, just all systems go to try and win at all costs.
That is what makes this such an exciting week for Daily Fantasy Leagues. Every player is going to try his very best to be worth every penny, so letís take a look and see who is poised to be the best value. My plan is to rank each position by value, not necessarily by who I expect to score the most. (Remember these numbers are based on FanDuel.comís 60K leagues)
QB
1. Cam Newton 2. Tony Romo 3. Andrew Luck 4. Joe Flacco 5. Matthew Stafford 6. Andy Dalton
7. Ben Roethlisberger 8. Ryan Lindley
Newton is the fourth most expensive QB, has had several solid weeks in a row, and is playing a Cardinals secondary that has been absolutely torched in both of their final two games and five of their final six. I expect Luck and Romo to be 1 and 2 in scoring, but Newton is the best value.
On the flip side Big Ben gets the Ravens that have allowed single-digit scoring to QBís the last three weeks of the season, and he may not have Leveon Bell. Couple that with his one-great, one-terrible outings vs. the Ravens this season and you have an iffy play for the third most expensive QB.
RB
1. Jeremy Hill 2. Leveon Bell 3. Demarco Murray 4. Justin Forsett 5. Daniel Herron 6. Joque Bell
7. Jonathan Stewart 8. Kerwynn Williams 9. Giovoni Bernard 10. Reggie Bush
I am writing this very early in the week (Monday) and at this point I am assuming both L. Bell and Murray will be playing with limitation. Even so I expect Jeremy Hill to be the best value as he is significantly cheaper than either of those two, and gets a much better matchup vs the 23rd ranked Colts run defense! Even if Bell and Murray are unlimited, they play the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked run defenses in the league, so keep that in mind when valuing their close-to-$9,000 price tags this week.
If L. Bell misses the game all together then expect a time-share between Dri Archer and Josh Harris. If that is the case I would recommend playing neither of those rookies and making sure to bump up Big Ben and Antonio Brownís values significantly!
WR
1. Antonio Brown 2. Dez Bryant 3. A.J. Green 4. T.Y. Hilton 5. Michael Floyd 6. Calvin Johnson
7. Kelvin Benjamin 8. Golden Tate 9. Steve Smith 10. Torrey Smith
Antonio Brown is the most expensive WR, but he should be well worth the $9,200 price tag. He is playing the 27th ranked pass defense and could have to shoulder the load for if L. Bell is in fact limited or out. He should be the best WR this week by far.
Keep an eye on Michael Floyd who appeared to be new starting QB Ryan Lindleyís favorite target Sunday (8 catches on 12 targets for 153 yards and 2 TDís)! If that continues into the playoffs he could be a steal at $6,600! When looking at values here also keep in mind that Hilton, Johnson/Tate, and Bryant play against the second, third, and fourth best pass defenses in the league respectively.
TE
1. Greg Olsen 2. Coby Fleener 3. Jason Witten 4. Dewayne Allen 5. Jermaine Gresham
6. Heath Miller 7. Owen Daniels 8. Eric Ebron 9 .Darren Fells
This position is a hard one to value this week. The top three were ranked No. 5, No. 7 and No. 10 respectively, and the others were all down from there! However none of these teams have defenses that rank in the top 10 versus TEís either. Honestly outside of Olsen (clear No. 1) this could be a toss-up.
Keep an eye on D. Allen to make sure that he plays this week, if not then Fleener becomes a much stronger No. 2 play as well. Oh, and donít play Ebron or Fells, I only ranked them to have at least one player from every team.
