Fantasy Column: Championship week is here for Fantasy Football
Published 5:00 am Saturday, December 20, 2014
Man, it’s difficult to believe that this is the final week of the fantasy regular season (for most anyway). I have truly enjoyed another year and hope that y’all have as well.
Since this is the last week, I am going to lean more heavily on rankings to try and help you win your championship, and starting next week through the Super Bowl, I will make it up by focusing exclusively on one-day leagues — Beginning next week there will be no Waiver Wire Article, only one article next week that will be an in-depth look at Daily Fantasy Values. You might consider giving it a shot this week if you are already out.

Just another reminder, the Philly vs Washington and San Diego vs San Francisco games will be played Saturday, so if you have any guys on those teams remember to set your lineups.
Quarterback
1. Aaron Rodgers. 2. Andrew Luck. 3. Tom Brady. 4. Matt Ryan. 5. Drew Brees. 6. Matt Stafford. 7. Mark Sanchez.
If you have one of these top-3 guys, then man are you set up with a nice head start for the championship. I ranked Ryan ahead of Brees based on their meeting earlier this season, but if Julio Jones sits then I would switch them.
You might have noticed that Peyton Manning and Tony Romo are missing here — behind Sanchez, really? But Sanchez gets the worst secondary in the league and those guys both have tough matchups, but owners don’t worry I have them at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
Running back
Trending
1. Eddie Lacy. 2. Leveon Bell. 3. C.J. Anderson. 4. Jamaal Charles. 5. Matt Forte. 6. Justin Forsett.7. Joque Bell.
I am not ranking Demarco Murray this week because he is too questionable to me. I know there is a good chance he plays, but there are too many scenarios where he gets pulled early: if he fumbles, gets hurt, can’t block, can’t catch — so I own him, but I am not playing him.
So am I telling you that you should bench Marshawn Lynch or Arian Foster this week because they aren’t here? Absolutely not. But against the No. 1 and No. 2 run defenses, you shouldn’t expect their normal output. Again, unless there is an extenuating circumstance — like with Murray — I say dance with who brought you.
Wide receiver
1. Calvin Johnson. 2. Antonio Brown. 3. Odell Beckham Jr. 4. Jordy Nelson. 5. Dez Bryant. 6. Demarius Thomas. 7. Jeremy Maclin.
I have also decided not to rank Julio Jones this week because of his lingering hip injury. If he practices late this week and is listed as a full-go then I would have him fifth, but there are too many questions with him right now as I am writing this.
I have now ranked three positions and there has been a Detroit Lion in each, and that is no coincidence. Between the Bears being so terrible on defense, and the possibility of Jimmy Clausen-Pickle turning the ball over often, there is no telling how many opportunities these guys will have to score this week.
A.J. Green, Randall Cobb, and T.Y. Hilton round out my top-10 WR’s and all were very close to being ranked this week.
Tight ends
1. Rob Gronkowski. 2. Jimmy Graham. 3. Greg Olsen. 4. Martellius Bennett. 5. Travis Kelce. 6. Antonio Gates. 7. Jason Witten.
Gronk, Bennett, Kelce, Gates, and Witten all have very favorable matchups this week and should be solid plays for the championship round. Graham and Olsen don’t have the best matchups. But with their talent and production, there is no way that you should sit them when you need them most.
Value Plays
As I said above this week is pretty lean on space for Value Plays, but here are a few I wanted to mention:
Mark Sanchez, QB, PHI — He is playing arguably the worst secondary in the league, has been pretty consistent, and is cheaper than E. Manning or R. Tannehill.
Fred Jackson, RB, BUF — He has been pretty good since returning from injury, gets a terrible Raiders run defense — allowed 19 touchdowns to running backs, and is under $7,000. I really like Jackson this week.
Harry Douglas, WR, ATL — Same scenario as last week, if Julio sits, then Douglas is a steal! In two games filling in as a starter Douglas ($6,600) has 9-plus catches and 115-plus yards in each.
