Milton L. McMullen Sr.

    RIDGELAND – Milton L. McMullen Sr., 93, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Jackson.

    He was born Jan. 2, 1921 in Clarke County to the late Frederick Loyd McMullen and Mary Pauline Compton McMullen.

    McMullen graduated from Enterprise High School.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. and served in the Pacific Theater  during WWll as an in-flight mechanic on B-17 bombers with the 27th Bomb Group. He was a prisoner of war of the Japanese, spending 3+ years in the Omori Prison Camp in Tokyo. He was the last known Mississippian to have been a POW in Japan. He served as the Commander of American Ex-POW chapters of Mississippi and was a member of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. Honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant, he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service. An American hero, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

    He is survived by his wife, Violet (Vickie) Davis McMullen of Madison; two sons, Milton Lenoy McMullen Jr. (Sonja) of Nashville, Tenn. and Terry McMullen (Jayne) of Madison; sister, Trudy McMullen Flint of Meridian; three grandchildren, Austin McMullen of Nashville, Tenn., Holly Collins of Macon, Ga. and Ashley Box of Madison and five great-grandchildren.

    Visitation will be held at Parkway Funeral Home, Ridgeland, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, with funeral services to be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Parkway Memorial Cemetery.
