DECATUR — Newton County High School coach Steve Harber notched his 700 career win and his squad outlasted Morton High School, 60-43, Tuesday.

“There’s been a lot of kids at a lot of different places who have helped contribute to this,” said Harber, who has spent 38 years as a head coach — including stints at Union High School, Forest High School, Lamar School and the last six years at NCHS. “A lot of people involved have helped me get here — my wife (Pam) and my daughters (Brandi Reeves, Stephanie Houston and Stacy Reese). I’ve just been real blessed to coach some great kids, and we have had great success.”

Following the game, Harber was presented with the game ball from his players.

“I don’t know what to say,” Harber said. “It’s been a lot of bus rides. I’m just extremely blessed and fortunate to have great people around me and good enough health to coach all these years.”

Harber said he is thankful for the support shown from Allen Ware, who has been at his side for most of the wins.

“He’s been my lifetime coach,” Harber said. “He’s probably seen about 500 of my wins.”

Isaiah Lewis scored 19 points in leading Newton County in the milestone win.

The Cougars (1-0) will be back in action Friday when they travel to Choctaw Central High School.

Added Harber, “I want to thank all the fans and players that had something to do with this.”
