Clarkdale coach makes pivotal call to help lift team to win

Clarkdale High School’s Justin Goodwin fights for extra yardage in a game played against Southeast Lauderdale High School earlier this year. Good win scored the game-winning two-point conversion in last week’s contest against St. Andrews High School in double overtime.

It was a game-deciding decision.

Trailing St. Andrews High School 48-41 in double overtime last week, Clarkdale High School’s Conner Moheb plunged into the end zone from four yards out to narrow the gap, 48-47.

On the sidelines, Bulldogs’ coach Wes Roy held up two fingers indicating his squad would attempt a two-point conversion to ultimately win or lose the game on the next play.

And what happened next?

“We just ran a quick pitch to the right,” Roy said. “(Running back) Justin Goodwin pretty much went into the end zone untouched. (Offensive tackle) Stephen Bickford made a really good block.”

Roy said the decision to go for two came down to a gut decision.

“We were talking about (as a coaching staff) what we were going to do after (St. Andrews) scored,” Roy said. “And after we scored, we called timeout and asked the players what they wanted to do.”

And the players’ answer was to go for the two-point conversion.

“It was an overwhelming majority,” Roy said. “They gave me the confidence to make the call to go for it. It was a huge win for us and to win in that fashion is just a tremendous feeling.”

Yet Clarkdale (2-4) has little time to revel in its triump as it gets set to take to the road Friday for a district-opening contest against Lake High School.

“It’s not going to get any easier from this point forward,” Roy said. “We can’t rest, and we can’t let our guard down. Lake is a really hard-nosed, well-coached football team. We know we’re going to be in a battle when we face them.”

The second-year coach stated the key for his squad Friday will depend on how well the defense performs.

“We can’t give up 48 points like we did this past week,” Roy said. “We’re going to have to find a way to contain them, then keep the momentum going for us offensively.”

ENTERPRISE TO FACE UNION

ENTERPRISE — The Enterprise High School football team has had a strong start to the 2014 campaign.

The Bulldogs have won four of their first six contests, including a 46-0 thrashing of Choctaw Central High School last week.

“Our offense was able to control the football for most of the night,” Enterprise coach Kelly Jimmerson said. “We ran the ball extremely well, and defensively we were able to force three takeaways.

“We did a good job of jumping on them early, and we never let our foot off the gas.”

Jimmerson stated its the mindset his players have had each day that has led to their early season success.

“We’ve had a great attitude and great effort,” the Enterprise coach said. “All the credit goes to the kids … It makes coaching a lot easier”

Enterprise will look to take the momentum they’ve built up from last week’s win into a district-road-opener against Union High School.

“We’ve been playing them forever, and it’s always a great ball game,” Jimmerson said. “It’s going to be a physical football game, and they’re going to get after us on defense. I think it could come down to which team has the ball last.

“We’re going to have to come up with some key stops on defense, and we can’t turn the ball over on offense.”
