Who to play becoming more clear as season rolls on

You remember going to the Optometrist and he puts that big thing in front of you and starts flipping lenses and says, “Now, this should clear things up,”and it gets better and better until you can read even those crazy little letters?

That is kind of what a Fantasy Football season is like — each week things get a little clearer. Let’s look and see what we learned about who is for real during week three:

Guys to Grab

Donald Brown, RB, San Diego — Brown was here last week, but there was a new development in San Diego. Now not only is Mathews out, but Woodhead is out as well, for the season. After Woodhead went out, Brown had 31 carries and 5 catches this week. With Jacksonville and Oakland up in the next few weeks, he is a must-own.

Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB, Baltimore — Yes, there have been two other Baltimore runningbacks listed here this year, and no there is still no alpha dog. However, Pierce was out this week, and Taliaferro outplayed Forsett, running 18 times for 91 yards and a touchdown. He isn’t a starter, yet, and Pierce should be back soon, but if you need a possible runningback down the road, he is an option.

Andrew Hawkins, WR, Cleveland — Hawkins has had double-digit targets in all three games this year, and these are his numbers in those games: eight catches for 87 yards, six for 70 and seven for 87. With numbers like that, Hawkins is clearly a guy with great upside, and if he can start grabbing a few touchdowns, a top-15 wide receiver.

Niles Paul, TE, Washington — Paul is a guy that you may not have heard of (unless you read my rankings last week) but is a solid play while Reed is out in Washington. He has at least four catches and at least 60 yards in every game this year. Playing the Giants this Thursday, he has another chance to stake his claim as a top-10 tight end.

Other names to consider:

Brian Quick, WR, St. Louis — This is a guy that I have held off on to make sure he was for real. He has double-digit fantasy points in every game this year and is a good buy-low receiver option for those shallow at wideout, but I still wouldn’t start him yet.

Jordan Matthews, WR, Philadelphia — Matthews is a rookie that has had one big game, so the jury is still out, but he has the talent to at least deserve a look in most 10-team leagues.

Alfred Blue, RB, Houston — He only has value when Foster is out, but when Foster is (like he was Sunday), Blue will get lots of carries. If you own Foster, you should own Blue as well.

Ahmad Bradshaw, RB, Indianapolis — He is the best back in Indy, and I am still amazed that Richardson is owned in 30 percent more leagues. Drop Richardson and add Bradshaw, and thank me later.

Thursday Night Start ’Em Sit ’Em

This week we have a real puzzle on our hands since neither of these teams have been consistent this season. Let’s try and work it out together:

N.Y. Giants

I really like Rashad Jennings and Victor Cruz now that this offense is starting to get on track, and, well, I guess that’s about it. I know many of you are Ole Miss fans and want to hold onto Eli, and that’s fine, just don’t play him in any 8- to 12-team league. Donnell has been pretty good this year, but so has Washington vs. tight ends.

Washington Redskins

I like Kirk Cousins. As a matter of fact, I would play him over Eli, Tom Brady or Joe Flacco this week. You know what? I would play him before Peyton Manning this week. (Broncos are on a bye week; don’t think I’m crazy.) I like Garcon more than DeSean Jackson, but if both are healthy, then both are good options along with Alfred Morris. And if you just want a good sleeper, I like Niles Paul as a top 10 tight end this week as well.

Well there you have it, some guys to go get and a good idea of who to play Thursday night. Don’t forget this is the first week of byes, so check your roster and make sure you aren’t starting guys who are in Vegas golfing.
