1-day league means it’s time for changes

A new season is here, and that means that it’s time for some changes. No, I’m not talking about the wearing white after Labor Day thing, I mean I have decided to embrace the new way that tens of millions of people are playing fantasy football: one-day fantasy leagues.

I know, I know, I am just like you and love the old format of getting your friends together, having a draft, keeping your team for the entire season, working the waiver wire — don’t worry, my advice for that isn’t going anywhere.

But along with ranking the top players from each of the skill positions on Saturdays, I will also give advice on how much money to spend on each and will highlight sleepers that would be great “Value-Picks” to take and still stay under the salary cap. The hope is to embrace the new-age of fantasy football while still helping guide all of the old-school fantasy players like myself to league victory.

My first waiver-wire advice of the season is, you shouldn’t be looking at the waiver wire before week one, but if you are, here are a few guys you might target:

Jake Locker, QB, Tennessee — Am I telling you that in a normal 10-team league that you should pick up Jake Locker? Absolutely not. This is the WW article for the first week, these are for emergency situations only. But if you are in a really deep league (16-team or a 12-team starting 2 QBs) and you drafted Bradford, then Locker should be your guy to replace him. In his last two preseason games, he went a combined 20 for 28 for 263 yards with two touchdowns and added 19 yards on two carries.

Dexter McCluster, RB, Tennessee — I know right, what’s up with the Titan love? Well, they are a team that doesn’t have a feature back, and I expect McCluster to play the “Sproles” role this season. He isn’t listed as the week one starter, but if you are playing in a PPR league, he could be a good player to stash on your bench until we know how this competition works out.

Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Carolina — You may see these names again later when it is safer to advise towards them, but here is another guy in a similar situation. On a team with no clear No. 1 wide receiver, Benjamin has the opportunity to seize the role, and possibly offensive rookie of the year honors with it. Grab him if available, he has WR2 upside and is probably cheap.

Some final anti-gambling words: I have seen the horrible effects that it can have on families and people. I know that many of you playing one-day leagues are playing for money, but let me be clear: I don’t think you should be. If you decide to anyway and lose, please don’t blame me, I am the one telling you not to do it.

Why? Because there is no such thing as a sure thing in fantasy football. Remember I do not, in any way, offer my advice as sure enough for you to put your hard-earned money on the line. So play the leagues, but play for fun, play the free ones, and if you lose bragging rights, then you will still be able to pay the bills.

As they say in “The Hunger Games,” may the odds be ever in your favor.
