Locals flocked to the Frank Cochran Center Saturday night to partake in the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi 27th Annual Celebration of Excellence Dinner.

The reason behind the event? To serve as a fundraiser in an effort to generate revenue for the club as it maintains its strong presence in the community.

“This event is always like a revival to me,” Boys and Girls Club Board President Denton Farr said . “You feel good about the youth, and you feel good about the good things happening in the community.”

In years past, the event has helped generate revenue up to $250K, but Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Ricky Hood said this year’s numbers are falling short of their target.

“We’re a little concerned about reaching the numbers that we need because of some circumstances,” Hood said. “But this community has always stepped up, and we hope those people that weren’t able to contribute early in the year, they can still provide contributions.”

The Boys and Girls Club supports roughly 200 kids on a yearly basis.

“The youth sustains us,” Farr said. “The youth becoming productive members of our society is key for success. If we’re not providing avenues and a good environment for the youth to succeed, then the future is in jeopardy. Our goal for is to provide that environment in whatever aspect so choose.”

With over 1,000 supporters in attendance, the theme of this year’s event centered around returning alumni.

“We wanted the community to see what their money has done over the years,” Hood said. “We’re bringing back some of our young people that have participated in our program and went on to do some very successful things.”

Among those returning was Utah Jazz 2014 first round draft pick and former Boys & Club member Rodney Hood.

“The Boys & Girls Club is a part of me,” Rodney Hood said. “I’ve been going to this event since I was five years old. It’s always been a great event, and I’m just glad to see everyone from the community come out and support it.”

Additionally, Hood is looking to take full advantage of his status for the betterment of the community.

“This event is great,” Rodney Hood said. “For me, the NBA is a platform for me to help other kids that are growing up in the same situations that I did. I went to the Boys & Girls Club my whole life. The kids see a lot of negativity throughout the year, and to see something positive, I know it means a lot to them.”

Attendees were treated to beverages, dinner, laughter and a good time for everyone.

Yet Saturday’s event was about creating plentiful opportunities for the community’s youth.

“Without this event, there are many things that we couldn’t do,” Farr said. “It sustains us throughout the year.”

Added Ricky Hood, “I love Meridian. All these young people are special to me, as well as this organization and the community.”
