    Sgt. Andy West, public information officer for Troop H of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, said more people will be traveling over the next couple of weeks and that as a result extra troopers will be patrolling area roadways.

    “We will be utilizing all available manpower throughout the holiday season to ensure the highways are safe for everyone,” West said. “We will be setting up different kinds of operations in various locations that we hope will get the message across for everyone to drive safely.”

    West said numerous roadside safety checkpoints and increased radar patrols should be expected.

    “We would like to remind everyone that the responsibility of safe travel lies in the hands of the motoring public,” West said. “Be responsible this holiday season.”

    West said troopers ask the driving public to be patient and to expect travel delays. He said for motorists to plan accordingly and adhere to all directions given by troopers.  

    West said who plan to attend holiday parties should plan ahead.

    “If attending a function where alcoholic beverages may be served, make travel arrangements beforehand,” West said. “Have a designated driver or call a cab if you are going to, or have been drinking, no matter how small the amount may be.”

    “Being a passenger in a vehicle with a sober driver is a lot better than riding with one of us if you are caught driving while impaired,” West added. “Making good decisions will save a life. Maybe your own. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.”
