Dede Mogollon, executive director of Visit Meridian, said the new app will keep visitors and residents up to date on what to do in Meridian. They are rolling out the app launch with a contest this weekend.

“If you download the app starting this weekend you can register to win an iPad Mini,” Mogollon said. “The contest will go for six weeks and we will name the winner on Aug. 15.”

Everyone is encouraged to like it or share it on Facebook or Twitter to get the word out, she said.

“The ultimate goal is to have people from outside Meridian download the app so they can constantly have on their phone what’s going on in Meridian,” Mogollon said. “Anything that is currently on our website — attractions, dining, hotels, events. There are even some things on the app about our musical heritage in Meridian.”

Stephen Martin, assistant director, said the office began its social media campaign about a year ago.

“This is just that ongoing process of building on that,” Martin said. “This is going to enhance what we do with social media. When we do things now, it will give instance access.”

The app will allow visitors to book hotel rooms here online through their phones. Smart phone users can find the app in their app store. Or they may go to visitmeridian.com/apps.

“When you go to download the app, it will ask you to register your name, your email address, your zip code, and you will be in the running for the iPad Mini,” Mogollon said.

Martin said those who have already become Facebook friends with tourism will see posts letting them know about the app.
