Ghouls, goblins and Catwoman were spotted running in downtown Meridian Saturday morning during the Meridian Kiwanis Club’s Monster Dash.

    An estimated 100 people participated in the 5K Run/Walk that also included a 1 mile fun run for kids. Runners were encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes during the run/walk that culminated in Dumont Plaza with an awards ceremony and costume contest.

    The event, sponsored this year by Structural Steel Services, is the Meridian Kiwanis Club’s largest fundraiser.

    Among other things, proceeds from the event will be used to purchase portable defibrillators for area schools, and help nonprofit agencies such as the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi and Hope Village for Children.

    “We will also fund eight scholarships for students at Meridian Community College,” Meridian Kiwanis Treasurer Dancy Sykes said.

    This the second year for the event.

    “This year the turnout was better than the last,” President Elect Richard Neergaard said while predicting that the event will continue to grow.

    Kiwanis International boasts an estimated 240,000 members, with 7,700 clubs in 80 countries.

    The organization is dedicated to improving the lives of children.

    “Our motto is, ‘Serving the children of the world,'” Meridian Kiwanis Club member Anita Jo Ross said.
