The numbers may say it all. Dozens upon dozens of albums. A few thousand concerts over the past four decades. Nineteen Grammy Awards. Clearly, renowned jazz guitarist Pat Metheny takes his work seriously.

    For his most recent project, Metheny joins his peerless skills with those of a saxophonist, a percussionist, and a bassist to create the 2012 album “Unity Band.” On Saturday, Oct. 6, this quartet comes to the Riley Center stage for a 7:30 p.m. concert.

    Solo work, duets, trios, unique collaborations — Metheny has worked with a long list of accomplished musicians. For the “Unity Band” album, he selected three other instrumentalists with few rivals in their own circles. With Chris Potter on tenor saxophone, Antonio Sanchez behind the drums, and Ben Williams on bass, Metheny’s own Unity Band makes spellbinding music.

    On his own, Metheny is skillful on many instruments, but he has carried the jazz guitar genre to new heights by reinventing the traditional jazz guitar sound, incorporating new technology, and even developing new types of guitars.
