Newton County extends streak

Newton County scored five times in the third inning and held on for a 7-5 victory over Enterprise Monday night in high school softball action in Decatur.
It was the first of two makeups between the area powerhouses. Newton County has a return visit to Enterprise yet to be announced.
It was also the 60th consecutive victory dating back to the 2010 season for the Lady Cougars, who improved to 15-0 this season.
Newton County was up 1-0 when Hannah May and Ashton Lampton started the third-inning rally with back-to-back doubles. Mary Snowden followed with a single and Latesia Davis a sacrifice fly, and RoNeisha Brown and winning pitcher Meagan Higginbotham (14-0) both added RBI singles later in the frame.
Enterprise scratched out single runs in the fourth and sixth innings, then popped three extra-base hits in a three-run rally in the seventh.
Hayleigh Harper had a solo homer in the seventh and finished 3-for-4 with three runs, while losing pitcher Harley Smith was also 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Lady Bulldogs. Katie Jo Riley had two hits.
Lampton was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Newton County, while Darby Bishop had two singles.
