With school out for the summer and the temperatures rising, Meridianites and members of the surrounding areas are looking for ways to beat the heat this summer.
From snow cone experiments to poolside excursions, residents are finding creative ways to stay cool: “I’ve been ordering a snow cone in a different flavor every day on my lunch break. It’s just too hot to eat and try to work outside,” said Nathan Sullivan, who is working in construction this summer while on break from classes at East Mississippi Community College. “I’m up to about 20 or so flavors, but sour apple is still my favorite.”
Other chill-seekers are flocking to local watering holes for summertime solace. Splashdown Country, a part of the Okatibbee Water Park, has seen a significant increase in traffic-flow in the past few weeks. Managed by the Pat Harrison Waterway District, the park boast 28 miles of shoreline and a children’s water slide.
Highland Park pool continues to boast high-traffic, and offers swimming lessons by certified water safety instructors. Abreone Alexander, Meridian native and mother of two, enrolled both her children for lessons: “They have really enjoyed their first few classes. It seems like it has been a lot of fun for them.” Her daughters, ages 3 and 5 are working on learning how to go underwater without holding their nose, and how to float on top of the water.
For those looking for some indoor summer fun, popular (and air-conditioned) destinations include the indoor pool at Meridian Community College’s Damon Fitness Center, and the ever-popular cushioned walk/jog track at Anderson Regional Medical Center Health & Fitness Center. “I can’t handle trying to run or workout in this heat,” said Dawn Smith, a Daleville resident who uses the walking track each morning. “No matter how early I get up, the heat is just too much. I would much rather be inside.”
Other ways to beat the heat include grabbing a concert at the MSU Riley Center, catch a summer movie release at a theater, or sign up for a painting party at Meridian’s Painting With A Twist. These indoor activities will keep you out of the harsh elements and offer unique entertainment.
Regardless of how you beat the summer heat, Smith offers a bit of advice: “Don’t let the heat get you down. Even if it is 100 degrees outside, I’d still rather sweat than have snow flurries. It’s all about perspective and attitude.”
