Benefit for South Harbor Shelter set for June 29

A local shelter that has served as a beacon of hope for the area’s homeless is receiving community support at a time of need.
In recent weeks, several Save the Shelter fundraisers have been held for South Harbor, East Mississippi’s only full time shelter for families. A component of Multi-County Community Service Agency, South Harbor is one of 15 agencies served by United Way of East Mississippi. However, according to MCCSA Executive Director Callie Cole, funding has not been adequate to operate the facility in recent years.
“We do receive funding, but the amount has not been enough to meet needs,” Cole said. “This year, we were $75,000 short in funding.”
On June 29, Weems Mental Health Center will sponsor a chicken plate lunch benefit. The lunch is $7 and will include 1/2 fried chicken, baked beans, cole slaw and bread.
According to Tuchella Wright, a therapist at Aftercare Coordinator for Weems Lifecare Center, Weems and South Harbor have a long-established relationship.
“South Harbor has maintained a working relationship for years with Weems Lifecare, Weems Mental Health Center, The Friendship Center and East Mississippi State Hospital,” Wright said.
Serving all of Mississippi, South Harbor Shelter provides immediate shelter for up to 90 days. The facility also works closely with local churches and community agencies in times of natural disaster or unexpected emergencies related to homelessness.
Recently, a Save the Shelter Benefit Concert was held at Evangel Temple. The concert featured gospel music by Byron Cage, David and the Giants and the Voices of Unity Community Choir. Although turnout was not as high as expected, the event did generate additional funds for the local shelter.
“We were disappointed by the attendance. We had some really good music performed by some amazing musicians, especially from the local area,” Cole said.
Although final totals from the concert are not available, Cole said the event raised more than $17,000 for South Harbor.
“We are so grateful for how the people of this community have shown their support for the shelter,” she said. “We couldn’t do it without them.”
