    New and old club business, as well as highlights from the recent Southeast Area MHV meeting were among discussions at the March meeting of the Newton MHV Council.

      The March 23, 2012, meeting was held in Decatur. After the minutes and treasurer’s report were read and approved, new business was discussed. Committee reports were presented.

    Two committee groups were appointed. The first, the 4-H Scholarship committee is comprised of Paulette Trammill, Monica Logan and Leora Chapman. The second, the fundraising committee includes Rosie Logan, Leora Chapman and Shirley Johnson.

    During the discussion of old business, members voted to keep the current  parliamentarian and president for another two years. Members will vote in May to adopt County MHV by-laws. The program for April’s club meeting will be Financial Literacy Education.

    The Southeast Area MHV meeting was held in March at Covington County Multi-Purpose building in Collins. Marie Shoemake of the Chamber of Commerce welcomed the group.

    Dr. Patricia Knight presented the Extension Service Update and MHV State President Francis Speed announced changes for the State Council meeting in May at Mississippi State University.

     The award for Best County Secretary’s Record was a three-way tie among Newton, Covington and Lauderdale counties.

    It was announced that Newton County donated 140 items to soldiers in Afghanistan.

    The Fashion Revue was narrated by Susan Cosgrove, county director/Area Family Resource Management agent of Newton County. Four members from Newton County modeled for Clothing Construction; each received blue ribbons.

    MHV members filled out evaluations and entertainment was provided by “Hot Coffee Strummers,” a dulcimar group from Collins.

    The meeting concluded with reading the MHV Collect.

    The Fall Area meeting will be Sept. 18, with Jasper County serving as host.
