LCSD Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said investigators were called to the facility shortly before midnight Monday to an initial report Stuart Brooks, 33, committed suicide in his cell. Calhoun said a death investigation was immediately launched.

Brooks’ cell mate, who Calhoun did not identify, has been questioned but no charges have been filed.

Calhoun said guards transported Brooks to the facility infirmary and then Brooks was taken to a Meridian hospital where he was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning.

Calhoun said the preliminary cause of death from the medical examiner’s office was listed as undetermined as of Wednesday. He said investigators have collected some physical evidence pertaining to the incident and that the probe is ongoing.

Brooks was serving a three-year sentence for failure to register as a sex offender out of Warren County. Brooks was incarcerated on Sept. 23, 2010.
