YORK, Ala. – A memorial service celebrating the life of John William (Bill) Nixon will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Livingston United Methodist Church. followed by a reception for friends and family in the fellowship hall. Bumpers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Nixon, 83, of Livingston, died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian, Miss. He was born on Jan. 22, 1928, in Epes, Ala. to Percy and Nettie Nixon, the youngest of three children. Bill served in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1948. He then entered the University of West Alabama and graduated from the University of Denver, Colo., with a degree in business administration.
Bill was comptroller for Gayfer’s Department Store. He later moved home to Sumter County and was executive administrator of the Sumter County Water Authority from 1975 until his retirement in 1996. Bill was an active member of Livingston United Methodist Church, where he started a monthly Interdenominational Men’s Breakfast. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club and Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Caryl; their three children, Debra Nixon Robinson, John William Nixon Jr. and Linda Nixon Ortman and her husband, Daniel; six grandchildren: Lindsay Robinson, Bailey Robinson, Paige Nixon, Samantha Ortman, Megan Ortman and Emma Ortman; his brother, Percy Colon Nixon and his wife, Miriam; his sister, Josephine Nixon Reed; and a large loving family.
