Rosie Logan informed members about the national observance, which rallies millions of Americans into a single day of action to help change the world. It is held annually on the fourth Saturday of October.

Logan also encouraged the club to donate canned goods to the local Salvation Army affiliate. A deadline of Oct. 28 has been set for members to turn in items to Johnnie M. Walker, club president.

Other projects discussed included delivering Halloween goody bags to residents of Hill Top Manor Nursing Home in Union and donating a uniform to a needy student in the Newton Public School District. The club is making seven dresses for needy children around the world, as well as donating several newborn caps to local hospitals.

The Oct. 8, 2011, meeting was held at Newton Public Library and called to order by the club president. Shirley Johnson led the devotional song “Glory, Glory,” followed by a scriptural reading from Psalm 23 by Monica Logan. The devotional ended with prayer led by Johnson.

Club members read and discussed the Thought for the Month of October: “Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.”

During the business session, the secretary read the minutes, which were approved as read. New business included a thank-you card from Bedford Nursing Home in Newton for centerpieces donated from the Annual Fall MHV meeting, which was held at the Newton Depot in September.

Members were reminded that the next council meeting will be held Oct. 28 at 9:30 a.m., at the MSU Extension Service Office in Decatur.

The meeting adjourned with members reading the MHV Creed.

The next meeting of the St. John MHV CLUB will be held Nov. 12 at 9:30 a.m.
