- Four railroad crossings in Meridian, such as this one at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Drive (31st Avenue) will be closed at some point beginning Thursday as crews from Norfolk Southern Railroad work to conduct maintenance on the crossings.
Motorists in Meridian may have to find some alternate routes in order to get around town in the next few days.
Officials with Norfolk Southern Railroad say several crossings in Meridian will be closed over the next several days due to maintenance.
“We hope this is just a small inconvenience to motorists as we try to repair and upgrade some of the crossings,” say officials with the railroad. “We will start in the southern part of the city and move northward to three other crossings,”
Railroad officials say the closings will begin at 7 a.m. Thursday at Sewer Plant Road on Highway 11 South and move north to the Arundel Road crossing that sits alongside Interstate 20/59. The maintenance crew will then move to the 49th Avenue crossing at Lauderdale County Farm Supply, and then to 31st Avenue (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Drive). Officials hope the work is completed by Saturday.
Motorists approaching these areas are asked to drive cautiously, to be aware of workers and to adhere to any detours that may be posted.
