Lauderdale County Department authorities hoped the results of a complete and detailed autopsy report would put all the pieces together in the August drowning death of Charles “Chip” Fleming at Dalewood Lake.

But Thursday afternoon, LCSD Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said that despite having the report back, the investigation is continuing.

“We have the autopsy report information and the investigation is ongoing,” Calhoun said.

Fleming reportedly drowned at Dalewood Lake in the early morning hours of Aug. 8 after spending the night with his wife and friends on a party barge. For almost two days divers, search and rescue personnel and other emergency officials tried to locate the body. Late on the following day the body was retrieved from the water.

Sheriff Billy Sollie said at the time of the recovery that he requested a full autopsy, including toxicology analysis. He said the detailed analysis was needed to make sure of how, and ultimately, why Fleming died.

“The community has generated a great many rumors and conspiracy theories and we want to be sure we have the most complete and concise information we can get from the medical examiner,” Sollie said in August.

Calhoun said Thursday that the investigation is still categorized as a death investigation and not a homicide.

Fleming was said to have gone down in water that was 25 feet deep.
